Adam Wilt, Art Adams, Dane Brehm, Phil Bowen, Mike Epple, and I met at Chater Camera in
Berkeley on July 3, to have a look at the new features and fixes in a recent Build 16 Beta release
of firmware for the RED ONE camera.
This meeting spawned the 320 vs 160 ISO rating thread on CML.
See Adam's technical notes about this release notes over at PVC
My own observation is that (finally) with build 16, monitoring is much easier.
In previous builds the Rec 709 outputs really were a challenge both in terms of color rendition and
brightness. The new RedSpace LUT makes it much easier to see what you are doing.
The group could confirm that 1080p playback is possible, and was able to reproduce the Codec Errors.
However, by the time Build 16 reaches release status, the codec errors should be a thing of the past.
Dane showed us lots of new menu items and features. Everyone noticed the grayscale that can be popped up
next to the image. Lots of very handy updates are showing up in the menu system.
We spent some time looking into the question of whether the noise levels have improved. Dane showed us a
convincing comparison between Builds 15 and 16. It seems to me that the camera functions
more and more like a high end production camera and less like something fresh from someone's lab. And that's a good thing.
As I look at each successive release of the firmware, I'm more impressed with the camera and
the development group at Red. It is great to see their application of modern technology
bringing such rapid feature upgrades and fixes to this remarkable motion picture camera.

Thanks, as always, to Jay and John at Chater Camera for letting us take over their space and tie up their hardware.
